Day 1 – Imperial Cities of Fez & Meknes + Middle Atlas (1 week)
Arrival in Fez
Upon arrival at Fez Airport, you will be met and transferred to the old city center, the medina. The final part of the journey through the narrow alleyways to the charming riad hotel is on foot. A suitcase with wheels is recommended for this trip, especially since you will travel independently by train from Meknes to Fez on day 6. At the riad, you will receive a warm and personal welcome. Before exploring the historic city center, you will receive practical tips on how to find your way back to the riad. Navigating medieval Fez, with its maze of winding streets and alleys, is not always easy. As a guideline, streets that go downhill lead toward the central, partly underground river Oued Bou Khrareb.
Day 2 – Imperial Cities of Fez & Meknes + Middle Atlas (1 week)
Highlights of Fès el Bali and Fès el Jdid
Today is dedicated to exploring old Fez, Fès el Bali. After booking, you will receive a list of must-see highlights. In the morning, we recommend taking a petit taxi to the potters’ hill, where you can admire traditional ceramics and enjoy panoramic views over Fez. From here, you may optionally walk back to the old city center.
Do not forget to visit Fès el Jdid, the “new” Fez, located outside Bab Bou Jloud. Over the centuries, the terms old and new have become relative, as Fès el Jdid was already built in 1276 by Sultan Moulay Abdallah during his campaign toward the Iberian Peninsula. A visit to Café Clock is also recommended, whether for a fun cooking workshop or an introduction to Darija, Moroccan Arabic.
Day 3 – Imperial Cities of Fez & Meknes + Middle Atlas (1 week)
Excursion to the Middle Atlas Mountains – overnight in Azrou
Today you leave the city to explore the surrounding countryside. Together with your driver/guide, you enjoy a scenic drive into the Middle Atlas Mountains. In the vast cedar forests, you are likely to encounter the wild Barbary macaques that still live here. In winter, it is even possible to ski in this region. The town of Ifrane, with its alpine-style architecture, feels surprisingly European.
You continue to the mountain town of Azrou, whose name means “stone,” something you will understand once you arrive. On Tuesdays, the local farmers’ market takes place here, offering a truly authentic experience. Even outside market days, Azrou is a charming town. Your accommodation is located just outside the town and offers beautiful views. Dinner at the family-run guesthouse is included.
Day 4 – Imperial Cities of Fez & Meknes + Middle Atlas (1 week)
Azrou – Oum Errabia springs – Meknes
A beautiful day crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains in search of the sources of Oum Errabia, meaning “Mother of Spring.” Here, rural Moroccan life unfolds at a slow pace, where donkeys and sheep remain essential to daily life.
Via Aïn Leuh, your driver/guide takes you to the source of the Oum Errabia River, which provides life and greenery to large parts of the country. Enjoy a walk along the water and lunch at one of the local spots by the stream. Afterwards, you continue toward Meknes via the provincial town of Agourai. In Meknes, you stay in an authentic riad. Dinner is included.
Day 5 – Imperial Cities of Fez & Meknes + Middle Atlas (1 week)
Visit the royal city of Meknes
Meknes is often overlooked because its medina is smaller than those of Fez and Marrakech, but this royal city has much to offer. Do not miss the impressive granaries built by Sultan Moulay Ismael to store supplies for his vast army of men and horses. Meknes is known as the Versailles of Morocco, a title that fits perfectly with stories such as the sultan receiving a modern European clock from King Louis XIV of France.
Day 6 – Imperial Cities of Fez & Meknes + Middle Atlas (1 week)
Excursion via Volubilis and Moulay Idriss – return to Fez
Today you truly step back in time with visits to the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the sacred town of Moulay Idriss. Perched on a hill, Moulay Idriss is the burial place of Morocco’s first sultan and remains an important pilgrimage site for Muslims. While the tomb itself is reserved for worshippers, the panoramic view from the hilltop is unforgettable.
Afterwards, you return to Fez via a scenic provincial road. Overnight stay in a cozy riad in the old city center of Fez.
Day 7 – Imperial Cities of Fez & Meknes + Middle Atlas (1 week)
Stay in Fez
Another full day to enjoy Fez at your own pace. Wander through the medina, take photographs, or relax in a luxurious hammam. The traditional tanneries and dye pits offer particularly striking photo opportunities.
Day 8 – Imperial Cities of Fez & Meknes + Middle Atlas (1 week)
Visit Fez – transfer to the airport
Depending on your flight time, there may still be time to purchase last-minute souvenirs. Your hotel driver will ensure you arrive at the airport three hours before departure. After a week filled with diverse impressions, it feels as though you have been away much longer. A truly rich and memorable journey.
