City trip Marrakech with Riad hotel as an oriental dream
For many, this city break to Marrakech is an oriental dream come true. These are the words of travel journalist and author Mariëtte van Beek as she introduces her travel guide to Marrakech, Morocco's southernmost royal city. This five-day Marrakech city break includes four nights in the medina , the old city center, in a charming riad within walking distance of the famous Jemaa el-Fna square. With our travel tips, you'll explore Marrakech's sights at your leisure, and along the way, you'll even enjoy a surprising cooking workshop . As an added bonus, you'll take a must-see day trip to the nearby Atlas Mountains, where you'll enjoy a beautiful walk through Berber villages and tea and lunch in local homes.
Marrakech city trip a fairy tale from One Thousand and One Nights
A flying carpet would be the perfect complement to this unique Marrakech city break, but a direct flight from the Netherlands and Belgium will get you to your destination in just 3.5 hours. This Marrakech city break starts on your preferred day of the week. You book your flight yourself. When booking, be sure to check flight times so you can enjoy your stay in Marrakech as long as possible. Would you like to stay in Marrakech for more than four nights or extend your holiday with a stay in Essaouira? It's all possible. Please note: the minimum number of participants for this offer is two, and there's a surcharge of €60 per person during the holidays (Christmas, Easter, Ascension Day, Pentecost). Would you like to upgrade to a more luxurious riad? We can arrange that for you as well.
Airport transfer (2x), 4 nights Riad hotel + 2 excursions
With this city break to Marrakech, almost everything is already taken care of. You'll be picked up from Marrakech Menara Airport and taken directly to your riad. Your stay includes breakfast and tourist tax. You only need to choose which day you'd like to take which excursion. For the day trip to the Berber villages in the Atlas Mountains, it's good to know that there's a farmers' market (souk) along the way on Tuesdays and Saturdays . For the cooking workshop, you'll first go shopping at the local market with the chef. This is also a fun way to see Marrakech from a different perspective . Don't feel like a cooking workshop? You can swap it for a three-hour bike tour of Marrakech's highlights. Departures are every morning at 9:30 AM from Guéliz , the newer part of Marrakech. The included excursions are precisely what make this city break to Marrakech so complete.
Highlights
Detailed program
Day 1 – City Trip Marrakech Riad Hotel + 2 Excursions
City trip Marrakech – from Menara Airport to the medina
After passing through customs, you will be met at the airport by your Maroc Travel driver. He will take you to the medina, the old walled city center, in about twenty minutes. The riad is located in one of the many narrow alleyways that are almost inaccessible by car, so you will walk the final stretch to your accommodation. Your luggage will be transported by our porter, usually Brahim, using his handcart.
After arrival, you will naturally head out to explore Jemaa el-Fna Square. Every evening, the square turns into a lively scene with street performers and food stalls. North of the square lies the large souk, the covered market. Our tip for this city break to Marrakech is to stay relaxed and friendly when dealing with the sometimes-pushy merchants and souvenir sellers. A smile and a bit of humor go a long way. Remember, you are never obliged to buy anything, even if you have accepted a hospitably offered glass of mint tea.
Day 2 – City Trip Marrakech Riad Hotel + 2 Excursions
Cooking workshop in the heart of Marrakech
This enjoyable workshop starts with a walk through the souk, where you will shop for ingredients together with chef Malika, Sara, or Fatima Ezzahra. They introduce you to the richness of Moroccan cuisine, full of flavors and surprises. Together, you prepare a traditional Moroccan lunch, still the main meal of the day for many locals. The chef explains how to slowly cook a perfect tagine and which herbs best complement each dish. As a bonus, she shares how to make preserved lemons and teaches you how to prepare and serve authentic Moroccan mint tea.
Day 3 – City Trip Marrakech Riad Hotel + 2 Excursions
High Atlas Mountains day trip
One of the highlights of this city break to Marrakech is the excursion into the nearby countryside. As soon as you leave the busy city behind, a completely different world opens up. In the distance, the red-colored mountains rise high, their peaks covered with snow in winter. Small Berber villages dot the slopes, home to friendly and welcoming inhabitants. In the village of Imlil, you take a light walk with a local guide through beautiful landscapes, passing a small waterfall and several tiny villages. Along the way, you enjoy tea and lunch in a Berber home, a pleasant way to get to know local life. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, you may encounter a lively farmers’ market, where people gather to trade everything from fruits and vegetables to chickens and even haircuts.
Day 4 – City Trip Marrakech Riad Hotel + 2 Excursions
Last day in Marrakech
Today is a free day to explore the city at your own pace. You can visit one of the many museums or palaces, wander through the streets, or simply relax. If you prefer a slower pace, spend the afternoon enjoying the sun on the rooftop terrace of your riad hotel. Another option is to indulge in a traditional hammam, the Moroccan bathhouse. The team at Maroc Travel will be happy to recommend the best places.
Day 5 – City Trip Marrakech Riad Hotel + 2 Excursions
Departure from Marrakech
Depending on your flight time, you may still have time to buy some last-minute souvenirs. Maroc Travel will ensure that both the handcart and the vehicle are ready for your transfer to the airport. Saying goodbye may be difficult, as there is so much to see and experience in Marrakech. Chances are high that you will return, perhaps next time to discover more of Morocco, such as a journey through Southern Morocco and the desert. Have a safe trip and “Ma’a ssalama.” See you soon.
