Detailed program
For those who prefer a self-guided walk, there is the Secret City Trail – Kasbah & Sultans. This interactive city trail can be followed on your own phone. You simply buy a Moroccan SIM card, solve riddles along the route, and complete the walk independently. The trail is about 4 km and takes half a day. It can be shared with up to four people and is also great fun for families with children. The short version costs €30, while the longer 6 km version, covering the full history of Marrakech, costs €50. This interactive city discovery trail is available in more than 50 cities worldwide.
The same route can also be explored with a local guide in simple English. Admission to three important monuments along the way is included. During this half-day morning excursion, Kasbah & Sultans, you will discover the historical monuments in the southern part of Marrakech. The walk passes the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bab Agnaou city gate, the Saadian Tombs, the ruins of the Badi Palace, and the beautifully decorated Bahia Palace. This area forms the Kasbah district, the fortified part of the city where the Sultans, and still the king, once resided. You will also pass traditional market streets and the historic Jewish quarter with its spice shops.
For the longer 6 km version, the walk starts at 9:30 AM at the Koutoubia Mosque, near the information panel by the small white domed building known as the Kubba of Fatima Zohra. This meeting point is a short walk from Jemaa el Fna Square, passing the horse-drawn carriages.
For the shorter 4 km version, the walk starts at 10:30 AM at Cafe Zeitoun Kasbah, where there is first a short coffee break. This part of the walk focuses on the Kasbah district, where the Sultans once had their palaces and where ordinary working people lived and still live today.
The walk is available daily with a local guide speaking simple English. For those who prefer Dutch explanations or exploring independently, the self-guided option can be followed on your own phone with an internet connection. A Moroccan SIM card with data can be purchased locally, and the self-guided tour link can be bought online and shared with up to four participants.
In the afternoon, it is possible to join a second walking tour called Souks & Secrets, exploring the northern part of the medina. This walk includes visits to the Madrassa Ben Youssef, the Kubba Almoravid, and the Jardin Secret. The highlight of the afternoon tour is the variety of crafts in the souks, where the local guide points out the most colorful, photogenic, and unique spots.
The guided walks take place in small groups of up to ten participants. Along the way, the guide shares facts, stories, and interactive questions to keep the experience light and enjoyable. Other entrance fees and drinks are not included.
The morning tour ends around 1:00 PM at the UNESCO monument on Jemaa el Fna Square, located in front of Poste Maroc, the old post office.
During this approximately three-hour walk, you will discover Marrakech’s rich history in an engaging and accessible way. The guide расскаunts the stories of the former Sultans who ruled vast parts of Morocco and beyond, and who decorated cities such as Fez, Marrakech, Meknes, and Rabat with great splendor. In Marrakech, the Kasbah district served as their fortified residential area, and this morning walk focuses mainly on this historic part of the city.
The meeting point for the half-day excursion is the Kubba of Fatima Zohra, a small white square building located in front of the Koutoubia Mosque on Boulevard Mohamed V. It is easily reached from Jemaa el Fna Square by crossing near the horse-drawn carriages. Nearby, there are shops where you can purchase a Moroccan SIM card, which is very useful during your stay.
The tour ends on the south side of Jemaa el Fna Square, at the UNESCO monument honoring the square’s status as World Heritage. Nearby is the old Bank al Maghrib building, now home to a museum dedicated to the intangible cultural heritage of Jemaa el Fna.
Morocco is known in Arabic as Maghreb, meaning “the west,” the land where the sun sets. During this informative and enjoyable walk through the medina, you will learn many interesting facts about daily life in Marrakech.
The tour ends around 1:00 PM.
An optional lunch can be enjoyed on Jemaa el Fna Square, followed by the afternoon Souks & Secrets walk starting at 2:30 PM. This afternoon tour explores traditional crafts, the souk of the wool dyers, the Madrassa Ben Youssef, and the Jardin Secret, and ends around 5:30 PM.
