Detailed program
Day 1 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
Arrival in Marrakech – transfer to riad hotel
Welcome to our charming riad hotel, an oasis of tranquility located in the heart of the old city center, just a short walk from the famous Jemaa el-Fna Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here you will encounter performers of all kinds, from fortune tellers to snake charmers and Berber musicians.
Day 2 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
Transfer to the Atlas Mountains – Imlil Valley and waterfall hike
Today we leave the city and drive toward the mountains visible in the distance. After visiting a local farmers’ market, held on Tuesdays in Tahanout or Saturdays in Asni, we continue along a winding mountain road through the Oued Ghighaya Valley and turn into the Mizane Valley. Following the stream, we climb to an altitude of 1,740 meters. In Imlil, we enjoy a pleasant walk with a local Berber guide, take in beautiful views, have lunch with a Berber family, and stay overnight in a Berber guesthouse overlooking the valley.
Day 3 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
Start of the Southern Morocco tour – crossing the High Atlas via ancient kasbahs
We continue our journey south today. To cross the High Atlas Mountains, we travel east to reach the winding road leading to the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters. It can be cold here, so warm clothing is recommended. We stop at Telouet to visit its old kasbah, then follow an ancient caravan route through the scenic Asif Ounila Valley, one of southern Morocco’s hidden gems, before reaching the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou.
Day 4 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
The Valley of the Thousand Kasbahs and the Dadès Gorge
Travelling along the Route of the Thousand Kasbahs, with its many fortress-like dwellings, we reach the dramatic gorges on the southern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains. We pass Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate, once an important stronghold, and visit the well-preserved Kasbah Amridil near Skoura. In the Rose Valley near Kella M’Gouna, rose hedges surround the fields, and in May the rose harvest festival takes place. We spend the night in the rugged and beautiful landscape of the Dadès Gorge. Those who wish can cool their feet in the cold mountain stream.
Day 5 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
Monkey Fingers Canyon walk and continuation to the Todra Gorge
We continue along the Route of the Thousand Kasbahs through impressive landscapes. In the Valley of the Roses, fields are bordered by rose hedges, whose petals are harvested in May for rose oil, rose cream, and rose water. Today’s highlight is a walk through the Monkey Fingers Canyon before continuing on to the spectacular Todra Gorge.
Day 6 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
To the Sahara Desert – the dunes of Merzouga
The journey continues south across wide plains interrupted by occasional palm groves. Eventually, we reach towering sand dunes, marking our arrival in the desert. Riding on the back of a camel, actually a dromedary with one hump, we travel to a desert camp with Bedouin-style tents. At night, we enjoy an unforgettable star-filled sky.
Day 7 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
Through the Anti-Atlas to the Draa Valley with thousands of palm trees
After sunrise and breakfast, we continue to Rissani, known for its fossil workshops. This town was once the center of the powerful sultans of Tafilalt. We then travel through the rocky landscapes of the Anti-Atlas Mountains to reach the Draa Valley, famous for its endless palm groves. This is the valley described by Jeffrey Taylor in his book The Valley of the Kasbahs, with its impressive kasbahs rising among the palm trees.
Day 8 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
Discovery tour with walks in the Draa Valley
Today we stay in the same place for a second night. For our first walk, we drive slightly south to the beautiful oasis of Tin Zoulin. After a walk and picnic lunch in the oasis, we head north of Tamnougalt to visit a local waterfall and explore the old kasbah of Tamnougalt. For those not afraid of cold water, there are opportunities to take a refreshing dip in natural pools with stunning views.
Day 9 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
Crossing the High Atlas back to Marrakech
Today involves a long and impressive drive over two mountain passes. We first cross the rugged Anti-Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tinififft pass, leaving the palm groves of the Draa Valley behind. From Ouarzazate, we re-enter the High Atlas Mountains and cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass once more on our way back to Marrakech. Along the way, we stop for lunch at a roadside restaurant in Tadart, just like the locals do.
Day 10 – Marrakech and South Morocco Tour – Group Tour with 3 Day Hikes
